Barleywine blend aged in Bourbon, Peach Brandy, and Amburana barrels. 

For the monsters out there, we set out to create a flavored-but-non-adjuncted barleywine.

This project is the result of us wanting to play around with some interesting flavors in a barrel-aged barleywine, without adjuncting or adulterating what we think a beer like this should be all about: deep, rich maltiness as a vessel for big punchy spirit/barrel character. Instead of added fruit and spices, it earned its fruitiness from a brandy barrel, vanilla character from a bourbon barrel, and subtle warming spices from an amburana barrel in intriguing ways that don’t distract from its true nature.

The first portion of this beer spent 25 months in a Weller 8-year bourbon barrel, then was transferred to a freshly toasted Brazilian amburana wood barrel for a rather short residency, before being transferred back to stainless for further aging in order to let the amburana character mellow out over time, taking the “edge” off its spiciness. In the meantime, we aged another barleywine in a peach brandy barrel for 23 months, where over time the bright and juicy peach character mellowed into something more brooding and complex. In the end we decided these two barrels were a perfect match for each other. By blending the two, the peach and spice elements of each respective half were further mellowed down into background elements which we think elevate this beer in a pretty cool way.
