HONEY PUNCH
Brewer’s notes:
“In 2023 we didn't make a Collins Family blend from various plums and pluots. We did get a chance to return to making a single varietal pluot beer, and I'm so glad we did as this turned out amazing and it's cool to see the individual character these pluots have. Honey Punch is a really late varietal and they are ridiculously sweet, which leads to this ABV being over 7% from a base beer that was probably about 5.0%. Honey Punch has a classic Collins Family thing, so if you like the blend but haven't had previous versions of this you'll recognize the character. It's a bit more punchy than the CFO blend itself, and the strawberry character is there despite it having more color.
At this young age the beer has a real distinct carbonic zing to it, which has some tropical notes that may or may not last as it ages, and the hops of the base beers come through as a black tea character that I'm a huge fan of and which I think sets this apart from previous versions. I remember first having these pluots in 2018 and thinking "no wonder they call it honey punch." And in successive years when we've gotten these, whether for their own beer or for Collins Family, I've never noticed the honey again, just the fruit punch. This beer has a huge honey character right now, though. Aaron said it's almost caramel-y like you get in some really nice ciders. Whether that will fade as the bottle ages I'm not sure, but right now it's drinking super well for how young it is. We debated whether to release it this young and Aaron advocated for it because it's sometimes fun to see the beers at a younger stage in bottle where they are really vibrant and have youthful characters which fade as time passes.
These plum beers are always basically summer-in-a-glass for me, and I'm really psyched that we got to do a single varietal beer again after a while of just doing Collins Family. Super grateful to Brian and everyone else there. Hopefully we can keep this trend up and do 1-2 more next year as the plum beers remain my favorites of all the fruit beers we do.
