Bourbon County Brand Rare Stout 2024 (18% ABV) - In 2010, we introduced a groundbreaking beer with our first-ever barrel expression variant. Our Bourbon County Brand Rare Stout highlighted the critical role barrels play as an ingredient. This iconic release set a new standard for barrel-aged beer. This year, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of our barrel house, we are reintroducing that exceptional release. The journey of this beer began with barrels that once held the rare and highly sought-after King of Kentucky bourbon. After aging for a full year in these exceptionally nuanced barrels, our imperial rye stout started to capture the essence of Brown-Forman's remarkable craftsmanship and legacy. But we didn't stop there. We then transferred the aged stout to another set of King of Kentucky bourbon barrels, allowing it to mature for another full year. A testament to our heritage in barrel-aging, this 2024 Bourbon County Brand Rare Stout showcases a regal barrel expression with intricately woven caramels, rich cocoa, and a luxuriously long finish.
Bourbon County King Henry II (13.5% ABV) - In 2022, Bourbon County Brand Rare Stout—a bold imperial rye stout—was laid to rest in not one, but two sets of regal bourbon barrels. At Goose Island, we typically use bourbon barrels only once for Bourbon County Stout, but experience has taught us those barrels still have more to give. Back in 2011, we released King Henry—a beer that inspired the creation of this latest evolution: a barrel-aged English-style Barleywine. When we emptied the barrels that once held Bourbon County Rare, we immediately refilled them with a decadent English-style Barleywine. Over the course of a full year, the beer absorbed the deep flavors of the barrel and the lingering chocolate richness of the Rare stout that came before it. After twelve months in those storied casks, King Henry II emerged with layers of rich malt character, evoking notes of crème brûlée with toasty sweetness—an opulent expression truly worthy of its name.
